Draft for review
Not every project deserves to be built.
We do not accept every client, contract or order. A project must present value to society in some form. Technical feasibility and commercial potential are necessary considerations, but neither establishes an ethical reason to proceed.
Purpose is part of acceptance.
Self-promotional projects and work that contributes to harmful habits or vices are not accepted. These are selection boundaries, not language added after a commercial decision has already been made.
A useful review considers the intended outcome, the people affected and the foreseeable consequences of the proposed work. It must be possible to explain why the project is worth undertaking.
Apply the boundary consistently.
Changes to a project can change its purpose or consequences. Ethical review should remain relevant when requirements change, rather than ending with the initial brief.
To confirm before publication: definitions of self-promotion, harmful habits and vices; decision authority; review and escalation procedures. No four-principle or eight-criteria framework has been adopted in this draft.
